AWS in Chile, with a USD 4 billion investment, will launch a new region in 2026

With an investment of USD 4 billion, AWS in Chile will strengthen its cloud presence and infrastructure, driving local training and technological development in the country.
Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) has confirmed that, by the end of 2026, it will launch a new Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure region in Chile.
This new region, named AWS South America (Chile), will provide developers, startups, entrepreneurs, and businesses from various sectors such as finance, retail, education, government, and non-profit organizations with expanded options for running applications and delivering services to end-users, all from data centers located in Chile.
This project is part of Amazon’s long-term commitment to the country and will result in an investment exceeding 4 billion dollars over the next 15 years, aimed at the construction, connection, operation, and maintenance of data centers within the country.
Regarding this, Prasad Kalyanaraman, Vice President of AWS Infrastructure Services, explained:
“The AWS South America (Chile) Region will help meet the rapidly growing demand for cloud services across Latin America and Chile, with secure, reliable, and efficient cloud infrastructure. With the new AWS Region, organizations will be able to leverage advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning, driving growth, productivity, and innovation. We are equally committed to investing in local talent, educational opportunities, and digital skills training to contribute to Chile’s economic growth and digital transformation.”
Additionally, Aisén Etcheverry Escudero, Chile’s Minister of Science, Technology, Knowledge, and Innovation, commented:
“The expansion of AWS infrastructure in Chile is a clear example of the country’s commitment to advanced technology, innovation, and the work we have done to create an environment where tech companies can thrive. This AWS investment reaffirms trust in our country and its commitment to technological development across the region.”
Amazon’s investment in Chile is part of a broader initiative to provide customers with advanced and secure cloud technologies.
Since 2019, AWS has launched several major initiatives in the country, including the launch of Amazon CloudFront in 2019, a secure and programmable content delivery network; the AWS Ground Station antenna in Punta Arenas in 2021, enabling satellite communications control; and AWS Outposts, which offers a hybrid experience for businesses in 2021.
In 2023, AWS also launched AWS Direct Connect in Chile, allowing customers to establish private connectivity between AWS and their on-premises infrastructure, improving security and performance. In that same year, AWS expanded its presence in Chile with the launch of AWS Local Zones in Santiago, further enhancing the region’s ability to offer single-digit millisecond latency.
Secure Cloud Infrastructure.
The new AWS South America (Chile) region will feature three availability zones from its launch, joining the existing 114 availability zones across 36 AWS regions globally. This deployment will strengthen AWS infrastructure, enabling organizations to benefit from greater data storage and processing capacity with high availability and low latency.
The ability to design applications across multiple availability zones will also allow businesses to achieve higher fault tolerance and operational continuity. Moreover, the launch of this region is part of AWS’s plans to expand its global presence, with 16 new availability zones and five new regions projected in locations such as Chile, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, and Europe.
This global infrastructure growth reinforces AWS’s ability to provide high availability and resilience solutions to its customers.
Commitment to Digital Development.
AWS is recognized for offering one of the most comprehensive and deep cloud service portfolios, including computing, databases, data analytics, Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, mobile services, storage, and more. This vast offering will enable Chilean organizations to leverage cutting-edge technologies to accelerate their digital transformation.
Amazon continues to support the training of the next generation of digital professionals in Latin America. Since 2017, more than two million people in the region have been trained in cloud skills, with over 100,000 of them in Chile. Through programs such as AWS Academy, AWS Educate and AWS Skill Builder, the company strengthens its commitment to the growth of local students, developers, and professionals.
AWS has also announced plans to hire local staff to support the operation of the new infrastructure in Chile, contributing to job creation and the development of specialized skills within the country.
Aligned with this goal, the new region in Chile will be energy-efficient, with data centers predominantly cooled by air. It is estimated that only 4% of the cooling will depend on water, which represents less consumption than the equivalent of two Chilean households for an entire year.
This approach highlights AWS’s commitment to energy efficiency and responsible resource management. AWS infrastructure is also designed to be highly energy-efficient.
A report by Accenture, commissioned by AWS, estimates that its data centers are up to 4.1 times more efficient than local solutions. Optimizing workloads on AWS can reduce an organization’s carbon footprint by up to 99% compared to on-premises operations.
High Availability and Low Latency in AWS.
Each AWS region is made up of availability zones located in separate geographies but with low-latency connections. These zones allow businesses to design applications that deliver high availability and operational continuity.
Additionally, AWS employs innovative designs in its data centers to optimize energy efficiency, with advanced cooling systems and the use of specialized chips to improve performance.
Organizations that require high availability will be able to distribute their workloads across multiple availability zones, ensuring resilience in the event of a failure.
The new AWS South America (Chile) region will also provide an option for organizations that need to meet specific data residency requirements, enabling them to securely store their content in-country while optimizing application performance.
