Equinix expands data sovereignty controls in multicloud networks

Equinix expanded globally its Fabric Geo Zones solution, designed to control the geographic flow of data traffic across hybrid and multicloud environments.


Growing regulatory demands around information management are pushing companies and organizations to strengthen control over where sensitive data travels and is stored, particularly across hybrid and multicloud infrastructures operating between multiple regions and technology providers.

In this context, Equinix announced the global expansion of Equinix Fabric Geo Zones, a solution designed to keep data traffic within authorized jurisdictions and reduce risks associated with cross-border information transfers.

The platform aims to support compliance with regulations such as Europe’s GDPR, Brazil’s LGPD and Australia’s APRA requirements.

The company explained that the solution is designed to prevent sensitive information from being unintentionally routed to other countries during automatic traffic redirection processes, a situation that can occur in traditional infrastructures where priorities often focus on speed and service availability rather than geographic data residency.

Greater control over sensitive data.

The solution applies controls directly at the network layer so data traffic moves only through authorized routes compatible with country- or region-specific regulatory requirements, without relying solely on configurations inside a single cloud provider.

In practice, this allows organizations to keep sensitive information within defined borders even during automated failover processes or distributed operations spanning multiple cloud providers.

Infrastructure and data sovereignty.

Arun Dev, Vice President of Digital Interconnection at Equinix, stated:

“Data sovereignty cannot depend exclusively on configurations within a single cloud. Organizations need controls enforced across the network and between multiple providers. With Fabric Geo Zones, geographic boundaries become part of the network infrastructure itself.”

Equinix stated that the platform is primarily designed for regulated industries such as financial services, healthcare and government organizations.

Among the highlighted use cases are financial institutions required to keep customer data inside the European Union, healthcare organizations handling sensitive medical information and government AI projects operating under national data residency requirements.

The company also noted that Fabric Geo Zones enables organizations to keep sensitive information inside authorized jurisdictions, reduce regulatory risks associated with international data transfers, maintain operational continuity during failover events and simplify deployments across hybrid and multicloud environments.

Infrastructure strategy for AI environments.

The expansion of the solution forms part of Equinix’s broader strategy focused on digital infrastructure for artificial intelligence and distributed environments, where organizations are increasing data exchanges across multiple clouds, regions and processing centers.

Fabric Geo Zones is currently available in preview across Australia, Brazil, Canada, Japan, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States, while deployment in the European Union is scheduled for June 2026.
