Equinix invests $28 million to expand data center capacity in Colombia
The growth of artificial intelligence and cloud computing is not only increasing the use of digital services. It is also putting pressure on the infrastructure needed to operate and scale those services.
In Colombia, this trend is beginning to drive investments aimed at expanding the capacity available to process and exchange data.
The growth of cloud computing, artificial intelligence and other digital services is increasing demand for data processing and exchange infrastructure in Colombia.
Against this backdrop, Equinix announced an additional $28 million investment to expand its BG2 data center in Bogotá with 550 new cabinets, doubling its capacity.
BG2 was originally announced in 2022 with a $45 million investment. The first phase included 550 cabinets, while the new investment corresponds to the project’s second stage, through which the data center will double its available capacity.
The expansion comes as Colombia’s data center market shows growth prospects. According to an Arizton study cited by the company, investments in the sector could grow at a compound annual rate of more than 21%, from approximately $450 million to more than $1.45 billion by 2031.
The report links this growth to digital transformation and rising demand for technology infrastructure.

Bogotá concentrates infrastructure for data exchange
The expansion also comes as Bogotá concentrates part of Colombia’s and the Andean region’s digital interconnection infrastructure.
The city is home to assets such as NAP Colombia and various Internet Exchange Points (IXPs), which facilitate data exchange among companies, network operators and service providers.
This infrastructure is complemented by the country’s international connectivity. Currently, 11 submarine cables reach Colombia’s coasts, providing connections to different digital markets.
According to Equinix, its facilities in Bogotá provide low-latency international routes to traffic exchange hubs such as Miami.

The company said Colombia maintains a relevant position within the Latin American digital ecosystem, supported by cloud adoption, the development of the technology sector and investment in digital infrastructure.

With the announced expansion, BG2 will add 550 new cabinets and double its capacity, amid growing infrastructure requirements associated with digital services, cloud computing and artificial intelligence in Colombia and the region.
