Gartner names Alibaba Cloud a leader in two 2026 evaluations

The dual recognition covers both AI models and cloud services aimed at supporting enterprise deployment at scale.

Gartner recognized Alibaba Cloud as a Leader in two 2026 evaluations, one for generative AI model providers and another for strategic cloud platform services.

The generative AI model market is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 59.9% through 2030, when it could reach US$139.2 billion. In this scenario, Alibaba Cloud was recognized as a Leader in the 2026 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for generative AI model providers.

Alibaba Cloud was also named a Leader in the 2026 Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for strategic cloud platform services. The two recognitions place the company in Gartner evaluations covering both AI models and cloud services designed to support their enterprise deployment.

The AI model market accelerates its expansion.

The generative AI model market reached US$13 billion in 2025, according to Gartner, while proprietary foundation models accounted for US$11.4 billion.

By 2030, the total market is projected to reach US$139.2 billion, with general-purpose foundation models at US$105.4 billion and domain-specific or specialized models at US$33.9 billion.

“The generative AI model market is at an inflection point, where enterprises not only need powerful models, but a full-stack cloud AI ecosystem that makes AI accessible, affordable and reliable at scale. We believe our recognition as a Leader in both generative AI model providers and strategic cloud platform services validates our approach, from the Qwen model family to our agentic cloud infrastructure. We are committed to empowering businesses around the world with open, scalable and reliable AI capabilities that meet their evolving needs,” said Dr. Feifei Li, Chief Technology Officer and President of International Business at Alibaba Cloud.

Qwen expands Alibaba Cloud’s model portfolio.

Gartner defines the generative AI model provider market as companies that develop and offer foundation models designed for enterprise use, capable of creating content such as text, images, audio and video. This is the first time the firm has published a Magic Quadrant for generative AI model providers.

Alibaba Cloud offers multimodal Qwen models in open-source and commercial versions. Its recent launch, Qwen3.8-Flash, is an open-weight mixture-of-experts (MoE) model with 125 billion parameters, of which 6 billion are activated per token.

To date, the company has released more than 460 open-source models, which have resulted in more than 300,000 derived models and accumulated more than 3 billion downloads worldwide.

Alibaba Cloud’s cloud infrastructure currently operates 106 availability zones across 31 regions worldwide. Its presence in Asia-Pacific is one of the components of the infrastructure intended to support cloud and artificial intelligence services.

The strategy combines infrastructure, models and cloud services.

Gartner’s second Magic Quadrant evaluates strategic cloud platform services, including standardized and automated public cloud offerings that integrate infrastructure, platform services and transformation services for organizations.

Alibaba Cloud’s “AI + Cloud” strategy integrates proprietary chips, scalable infrastructure, foundation models and applications into a single ecosystem. The company also offers hybrid capabilities through Apsara Stack, which enables public cloud capabilities to be brought into private environments and training and inference workloads to be deployed in central, edge and on-premises locations.

The recognition follows the one obtained the previous month in the first edition of the Gartner® Magic Quadrant™ for AI infrastructure in the cloud, which evaluates cloud service providers focused on infrastructure for artificial intelligence workloads, including model training, inference and maintenance.
