AI in rugged technologies redefines industrial operations

The integration of AI into rugged technologies is transforming industrial operations in Latin America, with 51% of companies investing in GenAI, according to the 2024 CIO Handbook.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has moved beyond being a future promise to becoming an essential element in the digital transformation of industries across Latin America.
According to the 2024 CIO Handbook, 51% of companies in the region have already invested in GenAI, while 46% plan to do so in the near future. This trend reflects an increasing understanding of the strategic importance of integrating AI into business operations.
Innovation in Rugged Devices.
In this context, it is crucial for all technological sectors, including rugged devices used in extreme environments, to integrate intelligent capabilities.
These devices enhance decision-making, optimize processes, and ensure real-time operational continuity, particularly in sectors like logistics, construction, mining, and agriculture, where physical durability alone is no longer sufficient.
The current demand requires that these devices not only be durable but also integrate AI, remote management, and analytics platforms.
Jim Huang, Sales Director for MEAF and LATAM at Getac, explains:
“In many industries, operations cannot afford to stop due to a failure or inefficiency. That’s why devices must keep pace with the real rhythm of work, acting as true intelligent extensions of the operational workforce. What we aim for is for the device to be prepared not only to withstand but also to perform advanced functions like AI or automation directly in the field.”
Accessibility and Technological Democratization.
The growth of these solutions is also being supported by new access models to technology. Many companies, especially micro and small enterprises, are turning to leasing or managed services schemes to access high-performance equipment without the burden of large initial investments. These models democratize access to advanced technology, reduce risks, and enable scalability in operations.
The Value of After-Sales Service.
On the other hand, after-sales service has become critically important. Leading manufacturers now offer extended warranties that include coverage for accidental damage, field component replacements, and specialized technical support.
This ensures that users are not dependent on third parties or subject to long waiting times to resolve issues. In this way, the technological ecosystem becomes more efficient, strengthening the end user’s autonomy and providing rapid, tailored solutions to meet their operational needs.
Huang further asserts:
“It’s no longer just about hardware; it’s the comprehensive solution built around it. Operational continuity and service are as critical as the physical durability of the equipment. Digitalization in field-intensive sectors, once an aspiration, has now become an urgent necessity to remain competitive. Integrating AI into rugged devices is not an option, but a requirement for achieving efficiency, traceability, and real-time adaptation. The technology of today must not only endure: it must think, anticipate, and accompany the future of work.”
The convergence of AI and rugged technology is marking a milestone in the most demanding industries in Latin America. Technology must no longer simply withstand harsh conditions; it must offer real-time intelligence, operational autonomy, and a comprehensive technological experience.
