Lin Tzy Li and the women revolutionizing technology

Female presence in technology has changed remarkably over the past decades, and Lin Tzy Li embodies this transformation.
Currently Senior Manager of the Health Sensor AI Lab at Samsung’s R&D Center in Brazil, Lin recalls that when she began her career, women were almost a rarity in computer science classrooms and laboratories.
“We used to receive very few resumes from women during recruitment; today, the reality is quite different.”
Career and Education.
Her career, spanning over 20 years in the technology industry and nearly eight at Samsung, aligns with a collective advancement toward equal access to knowledge and diversity integration, alongside the growth of artificial intelligence (AI) as a global-impact tool.

Lin’s journey began inspired by a mathematics teacher who recognized her potential and encouraged her to study computer science.
With technical training in data processing and a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Unicamp, Brazil, she completed a Master’s, a PhD, and gained international experience at the University of Virginia, United States.
“From the very beginning, I knew I wanted to be a researcher. The desire to understand, solve, and improve has always accompanied me.”
She joined Samsung’s AI team in 2017 when it was just starting and has since led exponential growth in projects and teams.
Currently, she spearheads digital health research that is reflected in global product features such as those in Galaxy smartwatches, including enhanced sleep detection, VO2Max measurement, and apnea detection.
Learning and Leadership.
For Lin, digital learning goes beyond mastering technical tools.
“Even in leadership roles, I remain engaged with the technical side. But I also learned to strengthen my soft skills: providing feedback, supporting teams, aligning expectations. That is another dimension of learning.”
This approach has helped build a diverse and inclusive work environment.
“Today, not only do I have female colleagues on my team, but other women also lead labs within the AI area. Increasingly, we receive resumes from women eager to be part of this change. However, we must still encourage this vocation from an early age, motivating girls to explore scientific and technological fields.”
Lin asserts that diversity is key to developing more robust and meaningful technology.
“The more diversity we have in information and data, the stronger the technology we develop becomes. We are heavy users of what we produce, so we need to include many perspectives to ensure products reflect the reality of all people.”
Ethics and Social Impact.
Regarding artificial intelligence, Lin notes that it has ceased to be a future promise and has become an everyday reality, with significant progress in its ethical and personalized integration into users’ lives.
“AI must be fair, efficient, and secure. It must be trained with diversity and applied responsibly. Today, it already enables real-time translation, multimedia content creation, and health monitoring improvements. But it must always be accompanied by a human perspective: critical, careful, and conscientious.”
International Digital Learning Day thus takes on new meaning. For Lin, knowledge is now a collective responsibility.
“AI needs to be understood not as a replacement but as an ally. Digital learning does not end with acquiring skills but with knowing how to apply them ethically, understanding their societal impact.”
Looking ahead, Lin warns about the polarization caused by algorithms that reinforce our own beliefs, which can limit real learning.
“This can isolate us and limit genuine learning. Diversity not only combats inequality; it also fights ignorance. We need teams with different backgrounds, ideas, and perspectives to create more creative and human-centered solutions.”
Finally, the expert emphasizes that in a world with increasing access to digital learning, equity remains the greatest challenge.
“Providing equal conditions for men and women is not a favor; it is an active responsibility. Innovation is not born in the code but in the people who write it.”
