AI and microcredentials will reshape learning and jobs in 2026

In an environment where skills become obsolete faster than ever, millions of people are seeking ways to stay relevant. Behind this urgency are concrete stories: professionals needing to reinvent themselves, students pursuing shorter credentials, and workers trying to understand how to coexist with artificial intelligence (AI) in their daily lives.

In this context, Coursera published its predictions for 2026, identifying four forces that will redefine education, skills development, and employment.

With over 191 million learners worldwide and partnerships with universities, companies, and governments, the platform emphasizes that technology—and AI in particular—is transforming how people build their careers and how institutions prepare talent for a rapidly evolving labor market.

1. AI agents will redefine how the world learns and develops skills.

Generative AI remains the most in-demand skill both in the labor market and on the platform itself. In 2025, learners enrolled in GenAI content at a rate of 14 enrollments per minute globally—almost double the rate recorded in 2024—making it the fastest-growing skill category in Coursera’s history.

Looking ahead to 2026, the company anticipates that agentic AI—focused on designing autonomous systems capable of executing complex tasks independently—will be the fastest-growing skill. The focus will shift from using conversational assistants to building digital collaborators that can act autonomously.

This leap, the platform warns, will not happen automatically. Currently, only one-third of employees report receiving adequate AI training. Organizations that aim to capitalize on its potential will need to integrate these capabilities across all roles and functions, moving beyond simple technology adoption to developing truly competent AI talent.

2. AI will integrate learning into the workflow.

The line between learning and working is beginning to blur. As more people turn to large language models (LLMs) for real-time support, learning is no longer a separate activity but becomes embedded directly into the workflow.

Over the past year, learning became the fourth most common use case for LLMs—a trend set to accelerate in 2026. AI will enable more adaptive and contextualized learning experiences, guiding each user to the right content, at the right level, and in the right format, based on their role and organizational context.

In this vein, Coursera announced a partnership with OpenAI to integrate learning into ChatGPT, transforming conversations into dynamic educational experiences. Additionally, the platform’s AI-based tutor, now integrated into most courses, has shown higher engagement levels and improved completion rates among learners.

The integration of learning into the workplace, the company asserts, could make the process more frequent, applied, and measurable—especially for organizations seeking to translate AI adoption into sustained productivity gains.

3. The productivity promise of AI will require role-based learning at scale.

The business value of AI will not depend solely on new tools but on the ability of people to use them in the specific context of their roles.

According to the World Economic Forum, 39% of current skills will change by 2030, and 63% of employers cite skill gaps as the main barrier to transformation. At the same time, only a small fraction of organizations report meaningful results from AI initiatives at scale.

The challenge, therefore, is talent. The company argues that the focus should be on role-based learning systems, linking job functions to the most in-demand skills and verified credentials. With this approach, investments in training can turn AI’s potential into tangible outcomes.

4. Microcredentials will become the currency of a skills-centered future.

Microcredentials with academic credit are expected to gain prominence in 2026, driven by public policy, employer demand, and technological advances that support modular and flexible learning models.

Today, nine out of ten employers use microcredentials to support skills-based hiring decisions. When professional certificates are linked to relevant competencies and integrated into career pathways, they provide learners with more flexible access to opportunities and give organizations clear evidence of capability.

This transition, however, requires strengthening academic integrity. While AI introduces new risks, it also provides powerful tools to verify authentic learning at scale. In this regard, Coursera notes that its AI-based academic integrity and supervision systems have significantly reduced plagiarism and misconduct, reinforcing trust in these credentials.

“Across Latin America, learners are taking control of their future by developing skills they can apply in practice, combining digital knowledge with critical human capabilities to succeed in a constantly changing world. As AI redefines the way we work, expanding access to high-quality learning is key to helping people grow with confidence, open new opportunities, and contribute meaningfully to their communities and economies.”

In a rapidly evolving landscape, education is once again positioned as a strategic driver. Universities, companies, and technology platforms converge on more flexible, skills-centered models where AI not only redefines work but also how people prepare for it.
