AI debate in Latin America pivots from fear to adaptation

More than 422,000 mentions show the region is now debating skills, productivity, and reskilling beyond fears of job displacement.

 


Is artificial intelligence taking jobs—or transforming them faster than we can adapt?

A new analysis shows that while fear persists, the conversation in Latin America is shifting direction.


The future of work is no longer discussed in hushed tones or confined to specialized circles: it now shapes everyday conversations, personal concerns, and professional decisions across Latin America.

Far from being an abstract concept, artificial intelligence has moved to the center of public debate, bringing a mix of uncertainty, expectation, and urgency to understand what lies ahead. A social listening analysis by MileniumGroup identified more than 422,000 mentions in Spanish about artificial intelligence and work in the region over the past six months, between October 2025 and March 2026.

The study covered conversations across social media, digital outlets, blogs, forums, podcasts, and other platforms in Spanish-speaking countries, excluding Brazil.

Shift in the conversation.

The main finding reveals a clear tension: while fear of job displacement remains present, it no longer dominates the discussion. Artificial intelligence is increasingly associated with productivity, skills development, reskilling, entrepreneurship, and professional transformation. Within the 272,300 classified mentions, the analysis identifies key narrative axes.

AI as an opportunity and value creator accounts for 41.2% of the conversation, followed by perceived job threat at 29.2%. Reskilling and adaptation represent 20.8%, while the future of work stands at 8.8%.

This is how Yeniffer Bermúdez, research lead at MileniumGroup, explains it:

“The debate on artificial intelligence and employment in Latin America can no longer be reduced to whether the technology will destroy or create jobs. The more relevant question is who is prepared to adapt at the speed of change. Fear exists and is legitimate, but the volume of conversation shows that opportunity and adaptation are gaining centrality.”

Narratives of labor risk focus on issues such as automation, loss of the value of human work, job precarity, and the potential replacement of creative, technical, and administrative professions. This type of content tends to amplify on social media, especially when linked to viral cases or public figures.

Adaptation as a requirement.

At the same time, a more forward-looking perspective is gaining ground. In more than 40% of the analyzed mentions, artificial intelligence is seen as a tool to boost productivity, automate repetitive tasks, generate income, democratize capabilities, and accelerate learning.

This shift in focus moves the conversation toward a structural question: what capabilities workers, companies, and governments will need to compete in an environment increasingly shaped by artificial intelligence. The executive adds:

“Adaptation has stopped being a competitive advantage and is becoming a basic condition for employability. The conversation shows that learning to use AI is no longer seen as optional, but as part of the new labor standard.”

One of the most relevant findings is the growing interest in reskilling. More than one in five mentions relates to skills, training, reskilling, upskilling, and professional adaptation.

The analysis also shows a shift in how the issue is approached: it is no longer just about learning the technical aspects of AI, but about using it strategically to generate value and improve performance.

Regional impact.

These findings align with international projections cited in the report. The Future of Jobs Report 2025 by the World Economic Forum estimates that by 2030, 170 million new roles will be created and 92 million displaced, resulting in a net gain of 78 million jobs. Meanwhile, analyses by the World Bank and the ILO indicate that between 2% and 5% of jobs in Latin America could be fully automated, although a much larger share will see their tasks transformed.

This suggests that the main impact will not be mass job loss, but a deep transformation in how work is performed, the skills required, and how value is created. The study also highlights regional differences across countries.

Colombia, with more than 134,000 mentions, and Mexico, with more than 113,000, account for the largest share of the conversation. In Mexico, the debate is more closely linked to education, technology, and digital creators, while in Colombia it carries a more emotional and social tone.

In Argentina, the discussion is tied to the economic crisis and labor reforms, while in Chile and Peru it focuses more on skills and professional adaptation. For MileniumGroup, these differences show that the impact of artificial intelligence will not be uniform across the region.

Factors such as access to education, connectivity, digital infrastructure, and institutional capacity will shape how each country responds to the change.

Bermúdez concludes:

“AI can become a driver of development for Latin America, but it can also amplify inequalities if the region does not close gaps in access, training, and adaptation. Technology alone does not determine the outcome. It is defined by the ability of people, companies, and governments to anticipate change.”

The analysis concludes that the regional conversation on artificial intelligence and work has entered a new stage. Fear remains present and emotionally impactful, but it no longer fully explains the debate.

The discussion is increasingly centered on the capacity to adapt: who will be able to integrate AI tools, develop new skills, and remain competitive in a rapidly evolving labor market. The question is no longer whether artificial intelligence will transform employment. The question is who will be prepared to do so alongside it.
