UNESCO launches free global AI ethics MOOC
UNESCO is expanding its efforts to turn AI ethics from a global framework into practical skills.
The organization has launched its first free massive open online course on AI ethics on Coursera, developed in collaboration with LG AI Research.
UNESCO has launched its first free massive open online course (MOOC) on artificial intelligence ethics on Coursera, developed in collaboration with LG AI Research.
The initiative is designed to translate the principles established in UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence—the first global framework on AI ethics endorsed by 193 countries—into practical training for students, professionals, researchers and institutions.
”Principles alone do not build ethical AI—people do. Through this course, UNESCO is taking another step in its leadership on AI ethics by translating the Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence into practical learning that empowers people to apply ethical principles throughout the AI lifecycle. This is how we move from shared commitments to meaningful action,” said Prof. Khaled El-Enany, Director-General of UNESCO.
Putting AI ethics into practice.
The course is designed to help participants identify and mitigate ethical risks, evaluate competing priorities and support decision-making related to the design, deployment and governance of artificial intelligence systems. In practice, it aims to strengthen the application of ethical principles throughout the AI lifecycle.
The content was developed with contributions from experts at Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Toronto and the Alan Turing Institute, with a focus on practical applications for a broad range of professional roles.

We hope this MOOC will provide developers and researchers with the practical foundation needed to build a trustworthy AI ecosystem and make responsible innovation a standard industry practice rather than an aspiration,” said Dr. Lim Woo-hyung, Co-Head of LG AI Research.
Program scope.
The Global AI Ethics MOOC consists of nine hours of online instruction and is available in 11 languages. It does not require prior technical knowledge and is intended for university students, researchers, technology leaders, policymakers and other professionals interested in AI governance.
The program includes hands-on projects covering topics such as privacy, transparency, sustainability and human autonomy, helping participants apply these concepts to organizational policies and operational processes.
Expanding access to AI ethics training.
The launch expands UNESCO’s educational offerings in AI ethics through an open-access course designed to help organizations and professionals apply internationally recognized ethical principles in the development, deployment and governance of artificial intelligence.
