New Coursera program teaches Spanish for workplace skills

Could language shape the direction of a professional career in an increasingly competitive global environment?
Three Mexican universities are offering a concrete answer.
Effective communication can make the difference between a missed opportunity and career advancement. With that premise, three of Mexico’s most influential universities have joined forces to launch a training program focused on the strategic use of Spanish in the workplace.
The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), the Tecnológico de Monterrey, and the Universidad Anáhuac announced the launch of the “Business Spanish Program: Essential Communication for the Workplace,” available through the online learning platform Coursera.
The program is aimed at individuals with an intermediate level of Spanish who are looking to improve their performance in professional environments.
Workplace-focused training.
The program emerges as a joint effort among these institutions to strengthen Spanish-language communication in professional contexts, with a practical approach centered on real corporate dynamics.
Throughout the course, participants will develop professional skills to write emails, take part in meetings, deliver presentations, and negotiate, addressing common workplace situations. The goal is to improve clarity, effectiveness, and professionalism in day-to-day interactions.
Voices from the launch.
Marni Baker Stein, Chief Content Officer of Coursera, states:
“We are proud to collaborate with UNAM, Tecnológico de Monterrey, and Universidad Anáhuac to launch this Business Spanish program on Coursera, enabling more learners to develop essential communication skills for the workplace. This initiative will allow professionals to strengthen their ability to communicate effectively in Spanish in global business contexts, supporting their professional growth in an increasingly interconnected economy.”
The program is structured into three courses developed by each of the participating institutions:
“Spanish for the Workplace: From basics to business,” by Universidad Anáhuac;
“Spanish for Professionals: Workplace Communication,” developed by the Center for Teaching Foreigners (CEPE) in collaboration with the Open University and Distance Education Coordination (CUAED) of UNAM;
“Spanish for Executives: Negotiation and Presentations,” taught by Tecnológico de Monterrey.
Scope and impact.
Through practical activities, the content aims to help participants communicate with greater precision and assertiveness, while also developing the ability to adapt to different audiences and professional contexts.
The initiative also reflects academic collaboration and the development of accessible programs that respond to the current demands of the global labor market. The program is now available online through Coursera: https://www.coursera.org/specializations/business-spanish-program#courses
