Akamai acquires LayerX to strengthen control over enterprise AI use

The rapid expansion of artificial intelligence is forcing companies to strengthen control and security over the use of AI-based tools within corporate browsers.

As employees and AI agents increasingly interact with generative applications and SaaS platforms, the browser is emerging as one of the main risk frontiers for enterprise cybersecurity.


The growth of enterprise AI adoption is shifting new security challenges toward the browser, the environment where much of today’s interaction with AI applications and SaaS services takes place.

In that context, cybersecurity companies are accelerating investments in technologies capable of monitoring and controlling generative AI usage in real time.

Akamai Technologies announced an agreement to acquire LayerX, a company specializing in browser-based AI usage control and secure enterprise browser (SEB) technology.

Through the acquisition, Akamai aims to expand its Zero Trust security strategy into the browser layer, increasingly viewed as one of the main interaction points between employees, AI-powered SaaS applications, generative tools and autonomous AI agents.

The company said AI usage control is emerging as one of the most critical priorities for enterprise security leaders heading into 2026, driven by the rapid growth of corporate adoption of generative models and autonomous agents.

Unlike proprietary enterprise browsers, LayerX operates on top of standard browsers, allowing organizations to retain the tools already used by employees without changing infrastructure or disrupting workflows.

The technology provides real-time visibility and control over activities such as file uploads, web requests, SaaS application interactions and generative AI usage, including within emerging agentic browsers such as Atlas and Comet.

Mani Sundaram, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Akamai’s Security Technology Group, said:

”Our customers are adopting AI at record speed and benefiting from the same advantages. Their existing controls do not reflect how employees are using AI and large LLMs.”

According to the executive, the acquisition will enable the integration of an AI control layer directly at the point of use to reduce security and compliance risks.

Zero Trust security and expanded AI control.

The integration of LayerX will complement Akamai’s existing Zero Trust capabilities, including Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA), runtime protection for AI applications and workload-based inference segmentation.

The company aims to build a control model spanning users, applications and infrastructure across AI-driven enterprise environments.

”Protecting both employee and agentic AI usage is one of the biggest challenges in enterprise security.”

The executive said the combination of LayerX’s technology, Akamai’s Zero Trust portfolio and its Edge infrastructure will help scale security controls for enterprise AI deployments.

Expansion of the cybersecurity hub in Tel Aviv.

LayerX employees, including co-founders Or Eshed and David Vaisbrud, will join Akamai’s Zero Trust organization.

The transaction also represents Akamai’s fourth acquisition of a Tel Aviv-based cybersecurity company in the past five years, further expanding the strategic importance of its regional security innovation hub.
