How AI is reshaping cybersecurity risks in 2026

A new report reveals why 2026 could be a turning point for businesses and governments.
Digital trust faces a critical test in 2026, in an environment where the pace of innovation outstrips the ability to anticipate its risks. Amid this scenario, business leaders warn that artificial intelligence not only transforms industries but also reshapes the threats that could compromise them.
Cybersecurity risk is accelerating, driven by advances in artificial intelligence (AI), increasing geopolitical fragmentation, and the complexity of supply chains, according to the latest edition of the Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2026, prepared by the World Economic Forum (WEF) and Accenture.
The report indicates that 94% of surveyed executives anticipate AI will be the most significant driver of change in cybersecurity this year, while 87% identify its vulnerabilities as the fastest-growing risk, surpassing threats such as cyber fraud, phishing, and ransomware.
Rising Risks.
This landscape demands a rigorous response from organizations. Ariel Goldenstein, Colombia Security Lead at Accenture, states:
”The benefits of artificial intelligence depend on disciplined execution. Poorly implemented solutions can introduce new risks — such as misconfigurations, biased decision-making, excessive reliance on automation, and susceptibility to adversarial manipulation — unless organizations incorporate strong safeguards, security-by-design practices, and continuous monitoring. AI can enhance cybersecurity, but only when deployed within robust governance frameworks that keep human judgment at the center.”
Adding to the geopolitical pressure is an increasingly unstable global environment. 64% of executives identify cyberattacks with geopolitical motives — including critical infrastructure disruptions and espionage — as a central concern, while 91% of large enterprises have already adjusted their cybersecurity strategies in response to this volatility. Goldenstein further emphasizes:
”Economic uncertainty and geopolitical instability have become deeply intertwined, amplifying global cyber risk and complicating organizations’ ability to anticipate and mitigate emerging threats. As political tensions and trade disputes reshape alliances and technological dependencies, the world is witnessing growing fragmentation of digital and technology ecosystems.”
AI Priorities.
In this context, the report suggests that the priority is not reinforcing isolated controls but ensuring that every AI deployment incorporates security from the outset.
In response, the MINDS program (Meaningful, Intelligent, Novel, Deployable Solutions) by the WEF and Accenture proposes five action lines to scale AI with greater confidence:
1) Integrate AI into the core of the business.
AI is becoming a strategic capability within organizations. Mercedes Osorio, Managing Director Technology Lead at Accenture Colombia, highlights:
”Companies are integrating AI as a strategic enterprise-wide capability, moving from tactical uses to a reimagining of core processes and long-term purpose. Sustaining AI strategies requires balancing investments in proven initiatives with short-term ROI, alongside higher-risk, longer-horizon bets that take time to mature but can transform how organizations operate and compete.”
Approximately 75% of organizations in the program reinvest to expand AI adoption and fund strategic objectives.
2) Redesign work to empower humans and AI.
This involves integrating human talent and technology, engaging those who know the processes, and ensuring solutions meet real needs.
3) Build advantages from data.
High-quality data remains the foundation for AI impact, driving the centralization of structured and unstructured data, complemented by new sources such as synthetic and real-time information.
From Diagnosis to Action.
4) Modernize technology architecture.
Technological modernization requires moving away from fragmented systems toward unified platforms that connect models and applications.
5) Operationalize responsible AI.
Adopting AI requires robust governance and human oversight. Osorio explains:
”As AI increasingly transforms business processes, organizations must operationalize responsible AI at scale to ensure trust, resilience, and meaningful human judgment where it matters most.”
The increase in AI security assessment — from 37% to 64% in one year — reflects growing awareness within organizations. However, the challenge now is translating that assessment into effective implementation, reducing risks without hindering innovation. Finally, Goldenstein anticipates:
”In 2026, cybersecurity will continue evolving across technological, geopolitical, economic, and strategic dimensions. In this context, cybersecurity is no longer a technical function relegated to the background; it has become a central strategic concern for governments, businesses, and societies. This year will test not only global technological readiness but also the ability to align public policy, ethics, and collaboration in defending an increasingly digital world.”
