4 key strategies to block cybercriminals in online shopping

During special occasions, e-commerce experiences significant growth every year. However, with the increase in online shopping, risks also arise, particularly those related to cyberattacks.
Cybercriminals take advantage of the hustle and bustle of these seasons to launch phishing attacks, spread fraudulent discount apps, and steal personal data from users.
In the face of these dangers, cybersecurity company Appdome has issued key recommendations to help consumers and brands strengthen their security measures.
Chris Roeckl, Appdome’s product director, highlights the tactics used by attackers during these periods:
“Attackers exploit emotional urgency and limited-time offers to spread malicious links or encourage unsafe behavior within apps. That’s why it’s important for users to stay alert and, especially, for developers and brands to protect their apps with robust tools that can ensure a secure and reliable shopping environment.”
The Rise of Cyberattacks.
The Colombian Ministry of Defense reported a significant increase in cyberattacks in 2024, with 69,349 incidents recorded, representing a 19.9% rise compared to 57,838 attacks in 2023.
This growth has been partly driven by the surge in mobile app scams, particularly during high-consumption events.
Fraudulent campaigns promoting offers, malicious links, and personal data theft intensify during these periods, making the reinforcement of digital security an urgent necessity.
Below are 4 essential cybersecurity recommendations for the web:
1. Beware of Fake Apps.
During these seasons, cybercriminals create counterfeit versions of popular apps or send fraudulent promotions that mimic legitimate websites to steal information.
Appdome explains, “The convenience of mobile channels makes them an ideal target for scammers.”
The recommendation is to download apps only from official stores and be cautious with links promising “exclusive discounts” that lack brand backing.
2. Always Verify Fake Promotions.
Tempting offers, often exploiting the excitement around gifts, are commonly scams. If a promotion seems too good to be true, it probably is.
Experts suggest going directly to the brand’s website or using their official app, avoiding clicking on suspicious emails or banners.
Legitimate promotions do not require sensitive information to access them.
3. Protect Your Mobile Device.
Using apps with active protection features can enhance the security of mobile devices.
For brands, it is crucial that their apps include security measures such as protection against reverse engineering, malware detection, and anti-bot features.
“Developers have a key role in ensuring that apps provide secure environments. Protection should be integrated, not an afterthought,” emphasizes Roeckl.
4. Avoid Public Wi-Fi Networks.
Public Wi-Fi networks, which are generally unprotected, are an easy target for cybercriminals seeking to intercept personal or financial information.
It is essential to make purchases only on secure networks, such as a mobile connection or a password-protected home Wi-Fi network.
Roeckl concludes by stating:
“A vulnerable app not only jeopardizes user data but also the brand’s reputation. Protecting the mobile experience is protecting customer trust.”
