Every May 17, International Internet Day commemorates the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the establishment of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
This date not only serves as an opportunity to celebrate digital advancements but also to reflect on the challenges facing connectivity, data protection, and the infrastructure supporting a society increasingly dependent on the global network.
Global Connectivity and Challenges.
The ITU’s Facts and Figures 2024 report reveals that the number of internet users worldwide has reached 5.5 billion.
However, a significant challenge remains: nearly one-third of the global population, or approximately 2.6 billion people, still lacks access to the network.
This disparity is primarily concentrated in rural areas and low-income countries.
In Latin America, connectivity has steadily grown in recent years, but profound inequalities in internet access persist.
According to Statista, Brazil leads the region with 183 million users, followed by Mexico with 110 million, and Colombia with over 41 million.
Despite this growth, it is evident that bridging the structural gaps in network access, especially in rural areas and disadvantaged communities, remains a critical priority.
Global Protection and Cybersecurity.
In an increasingly interconnected world, internet protection has become a global priority.
This involves not only safeguarding physical infrastructure but also securing the data that flows across the network, which includes privacy policies, regulatory frameworks, and, of course, cybersecurity.
In recent years, the number of cyberattacks, including data hijacking or ransomware, has risen substantially in Latin America and worldwide.
This surge has prompted governments and businesses to invest in more sophisticated digital defense systems.
International Collaboration in Cybersecurity.
International collaboration is essential in this regard. Organizations such as the ITU work to promote global standards to ensure a safer and more resilient internet in the face of increasing cyber threats.
Supporting digital infrastructure is another critical element in protecting the internet.
Data centers, submarine cables, mobile networks, and emerging technologies such as 5G are essential to maintaining global connectivity stability.
The development of local infrastructures and public-private partnerships is vital to strengthening network security.
Data Backup: A Priority for Businesses.
For businesses, having a data backup strategy is crucial for mitigating cyber threats and other external factors, such as natural disasters.
Martín Colombo, Senior Director for Latin America at Veeam, emphasizes that:
“Having a solid data protection strategy is essential for ensuring business continuity and mitigating risks.”
Colombo recommends three key steps for proper backup management: identify the most critical data, define the backup frequency according to the sensitivity of the information, and apply the 3-2-1-1-0 rule.
This rule dictates multiple backups on different media, including an external, immutable copy with verification to ensure error-free recovery.
As the future becomes increasingly interconnected, mobile data consumption continues to grow.
At the same time, new challenges such as digital sovereignty, artificial intelligence, and misinformation emerge.
In response to these challenges, the ITU makes an urgent call to accelerate efforts toward achieving inclusive connectivity.
This May 17, International Internet Day reminds us that simply being connected is not enough. We must build a more equitable, secure, and sustainable digital environment for all users, where infrastructure and policies serve to ensure accessible and protected connectivity worldwide.
