How can publishers turn website visitors who are about to leave into revenue?

The opportunity to capitalize on the moment when a user is about to leave a website is emerging as an alternative for recovering monetization opportunities that fall outside traditional advertising strategies.
Digital traffic monetization faces a challenge that is not always addressed in media companies’ advertising strategies: making the most of visits that end without generating additional revenue opportunities. Although companies invest in attracting audiences and keeping them on their platforms, some sessions end after a single article, without users continuing to browse other content.
Against this backdrop, exit intent is beginning to be incorporated into monetization strategies. It involves identifying signals that indicate a person is about to leave a page and activating an advertising experience before the visit ends.
One technological solution designed to address this behavior is Exit Story, a format developed by MGID, a global advertising platform. It identifies signals such as periods of inactivity, scrolling back toward the top of the page, or switching tabs. Triggers can be configured according to each website’s characteristics and audience.
Monetizing existing traffic.
The goal is to capitalize on existing traffic to generate additional revenue without necessarily introducing more advertising during the reading experience. Initial implementations of the solution recorded an average improvement of nearly 5% in RPM, one of the metrics publishers use to measure the revenue generated by their traffic.
“The results we are seeing with Exit Story demonstrate that revenue growth does not necessarily depend on generating more traffic or increasing advertising pressure on a page. There is significant value in the audiences publishers already have, and the opportunity lies in identifying moments that have historically gone untapped and addressing them with the right technology. For media companies, this represents a more efficient way to increase the value of existing traffic while preserving the user experience, an increasingly relevant aspect of building sustainable digital revenue models,” said Sergio Vives, Vice President of Publisher Business Development at MGID.
The search for alternative ways to monetize visits also reflects changes in the policies and standards governing the advertising ecosystem. Some formats used to generate revenue at the end of a browsing session were associated with the so-called “Back Button.” Changes in the rules governing these practices led publishers to seek other options to maintain monetization opportunities without compromising the browsing experience.
Alternatives to the back button.
In this context, Exit Story operates without relying on the back button and allows advertising experiences to be activated based on user behavior. Its configuration makes it possible to adjust triggers and adapt the format to the characteristics of each audience and the needs of each publisher.
“For MGID, the growth of the publisher ecosystem in Latin America represents a long-term strategic opportunity. Mexico and Colombia are key markets in our regional expansion, and our commitment is to support media companies with technology that enables them to develop new revenue streams and strengthen the value of their audiences. Exit Story reflects this vision: turning innovation into practical tools that help publishers capture greater value from their traffic and build increasingly solid and sustainable monetization models,” said Ana Trejo, Director of Publisher Acquisition for MGID LATAM.
The case of Récord in Latin America.
One implementation case in Latin America is Récord, a sports portal that sought to maintain its advertising performance after discontinuing a format associated with the back button. The outlet introduced Exit Story to its mobile audience and recorded a 335% increase in advertising revenue during the first few weeks.
Results also included a 532% increase in impressions, which exceeded 2.7 million, and 230% growth in CPC. Ad requests increased by 306%, ad viewability improved by 53%, and total clicks grew by 33%.
Subsequent performance showed that the results were sustained beyond the initial weeks of implementation. Two months after introducing the format on mobile devices, Récord recorded a 30% increase in vRPM. According to Andrés Dalma, AdOps Publisher & Programmatic Manager at the outlet, the solution came to account for more than 50% of the previous month’s revenue.
“Exit Story transformed the way we retain and monetize mobile audiences at Récord. We were able to customize the integration to capture users’ attention at exactly the right moment before they left the site. Two months after implementing it on mobile devices, we saw a 30% increase in vRPM, and the format currently accounts for more than 50% of our revenue from the past month. MGID provided us with a key tool to maximize the value of every visit,” said Andrés Dalma, AdOps Publisher & Programmatic Manager at Récord.
The case shows how identifying exit moments can be incorporated into digital media companies’ commercial strategies to make better use of the audiences they already reach. The opportunity lies in generating value from visits that would otherwise end without producing additional revenue, a challenge for publishers seeking to strengthen their monetization models without relying exclusively on traffic growth.
